Macron Urges UN-Led Mission for Gaza, Warns Against Israel’s Expansion Plans

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an immediate permanent ceasefire in Gaza, warning that Israel’s plan to seize control of Gaza City risks plunging the region into “permanent war.” Speaking on Monday, Macron described the move as “a disaster of unprecedented gravity” and urged the UN Security Council to swiftly approve an international stabilisation mission.

Macron proposed a UN-mandated coalition to protect civilians, support Palestinian governance, and restore stability to the Gaza Strip. “The Security Council must act now,” he stressed, confirming he had directed his team to coordinate the initiative with global partners.

His remarks came days after Israel’s security cabinet greenlit an expansion of military operations into Gaza City and the Al Mawasi refugee camps — a decision that has stirred domestic and international criticism. Macron cautioned that such a strategy would make Israeli hostages and Gaza’s civilians the main victims of an endless conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the operation, insisting Israel is using force “judiciously” and must “finish the job” to defeat Hamas. He said about 70–75% of Gaza is under Israeli military control, with Gaza City and Al Mawasi still considered Hamas strongholds.

Macron’s latest stance follows his recent recognition of a Palestinian state, a move that prompted similar recognitions from the UK and Canada. His proposal for a UN-backed mission aims to capitalise on that momentum and push for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis.
