Srichand Parmanand Hinduja (28 November 1935 – 17 May 2023) was a prominent Indian-born British billionaire businessman, investor, and philanthropist, known for his role as the primary shareholder and chairman of the Hinduja Group of companies, alongside his brother Gopichand.

Early Life:

Srichand Parmanand Hinduja was born on 28 November 1935 in Karachi, Sindh province, British India, to Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja and Jamuna Parmanand Hinduja. He received his education at Davar’s College of Commerce and R. D. National College, both located in Mumbai.

Business Career:

Hinduja’s entrepreneurial journey began in his father’s textile and trading businesses in Bombay, India, and Tehran, Iran. He initially focused on successful ventures such as the sale of food commodities and iron ore. Over the years, he expanded his business empire with strategic acquisitions, including Ashok Leyland and Gulf Oil. By the 1990s, he had established banks in Switzerland and India, solidifying his reputation as one of India’s most prominent business figures.

Throughout his career, Hinduja adopted a conservative yet opportunistic business approach, diversifying his investments across various sectors, including oil and gas, banking and finance, IT, real estate, energy, chemicals, power, and media and entertainment.

Wealth:

Hinduja’s business acumen led to immense wealth, consistently ranking him among the UK and Asia’s wealthiest individuals. His properties, including his home in London’s Carlton House Terrace, were valued at billions of dollars. Forbes ranked him among the world’s richest individuals, with an estimated net worth of billions of dollars.

Personal Life:

Aside from his business ventures, Hinduja was known for his family life and philanthropic endeavors. He was married to Madhu Srichand Hinduja, with whom he had two daughters. Tragically, his youngest son, Dharam Hinduja, passed away in 1992. Hinduja also faced controversies, including his involvement in the UK’s “cash-for-passports” scandal.

Despite his wealth and success, Hinduja remained humble and grounded, known for his teetotalism and strict vegetarian lifestyle. He passed away in London on 17 May 2023, at the age of 87, due to complications of Lewy body dementia, just a few months after the death of his wife, Madhu.
