Hassan, May 30, 2024 – Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, who has been evading arrest for several weeks amidst accusations of sexual abuse, has petitioned for anticipatory bail in three cases filed against him. These cases are being heard in a special court designated for trials involving sitting and former MPs and MLAs. Prajwal is expected to return to India on May 31.
As reported by Bar and Bench, Prajwal’s legal representatives informed the court of their intention to present arguments for interim bail on his behalf. The court has slated the next hearing for May 31.
In his plea, Prajwal attributed his lack of cooperation with the investigation to distress caused by an alleged smear campaign against him and his father. He stated that the legal process had been misused to cause trouble for him and pleaded for the court’s intervention.
Prajwal’s departure to Germany followed allegations of sexual abuse, with multiple women accusing him and his father, Revanna, of harassment and assault. Notably, on April 28, a 47-year-old woman lodged a complaint accusing the duo of harassing her and her daughter. Subsequently, Prajwal was suspended from his party on April 30. The allegations against him include sexual harassment and rape, with four women having come forward thus far.
The first FIR against Prajwal and Revanna was filed on April 28 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including those related to sexual harassment, stalking, criminal intimidation, and insult to the modesty of a woman. Following this, a rape case was registered on May 1, based on a complaint from a member of the Janata Dal (Secular). Another case emerged on May 5, involving a complaint from a farm helper who accused Prajwal of sexual abuse, while Revanna was accused of kidnapping her to prevent her from testifying.
Concurrently, Prajwal’s father and MLA, Revanna, has moved the High Court to challenge the legality of two cases registered against him.
The unfolding legal proceedings against Prajwal Revanna have garnered significant attention, both within political circles and the wider public, as the case continues to evolve.
