Early Career and Education
Born in 1973 in Germany, Buberl demonstrated an early commitment to education. He earned a Master of Economics from WHU Koblenz, followed by an MBA from Lancaster University in the UK, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. In 2005, he joined the Winterthur Group, which was later acquired by AXA in 2006. Buberl served on the Management Board of Winterthur in Switzerland, first as Chief Operating Officer and then as Chief Marketing and Distribution Officer. In 2008, he transitioned to Zurich Insurance Group, where he was appointed Chief Executive Officer for Switzerland. This role further honed his executive skills and deepened his understanding of the insurance landscape.
Joining AXA
In early 2012, Buberl returned to AXA as Chief Executive Officer of AXA Germany, also becoming a member of the AXA Executive Committee. His contributions were recognized quickly; in March 2015, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of AXA’s Global Business Line for Health, and in January 2016, he took on the Global Business Line for Life & Savings. Between March and September 2016, he served as Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Directeur général adjoint) before being appointed CEO and Director of AXA.
