Xi Jinping Urges Stronger Ties With Spain as Madrid Seeks Chinese Investment

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for stronger ties with Spain during a high-profile meeting with King Felipe VI in Beijing on Wednesday. The talks focused on expanding strategic cooperation and boosting the global influence of both nations.

King Felipe’s visit marks the first state visit by a Spanish monarch to China in 18 years, highlighting Madrid’s intent to deepen engagement with Asia as it leads the European Union’s diplomatic outreach toward Beijing.

China Pushes for Resumed Investment Talks

In a signal of renewed goodwill, China proposed resuming investment negotiations with the European Union that have been frozen since 2021. Xi emphasized the need for both nations to serve as “constructive forces dedicated to peace and development” amid global uncertainty.

“China stands ready to work hand in hand with Spain to build a comprehensive strategic partnership,” Xi said, pledging closer cooperation in trade and diplomacy.

While Chinese state media confirmed that both leaders attended a document signing ceremony, no details about the agreements were disclosed.

Madrid Expands Economic Engagement With Beijing

Spain has stepped up its economic outreach to China following the EU’s decision to impose tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles in mid-2024. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has since visited Beijing twice to attract Chinese investment in automotive, green technology, and emerging industries.

However, Spain’s thriving pork export sector faces challenges amid escalating trade tensions. China, Spain’s largest pork buyer, has threatened retaliatory tariffs of up to 62.4% on European pork products, a move that could hit Spain’s $1.2 billion annual meat exports.

King Felipe Promotes Diplomatic Balance

Beyond trade, King Felipe’s visit represents a subtler form of diplomacy, offering a royal channel for communication during politically sensitive times.

“The friendship between Spain and China undoubtedly benefits both peoples,” Felipe said during the meeting. “A relationship of trust has been forged.”

The visit comes as the United States criticized Spain’s deepening trade ties with Beijing, comparing it to “cutting your own throat.” Meanwhile, the European Union continues to express concern over China’s economic practices and its ties with Russia.
