Manilal Premchand Chandaria, OBE, CBS, EBS (born March 1, 1929) is a renowned Kenyan entrepreneur and philanthropist of Indian descent, known for his significant contributions to the business world and society. As a senior member of the Comcraft Group, a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate, Chandaria has played a key role in transforming East Africa’s industrial landscape. His leadership has helped grow Comcraft’s presence in over 40 countries, making it one of the largest and most influential business groups in the region.

Early Life and Humble Beginnings

Chandaria was born in Nairobi, Kenya, to an Indian merchant family who moved to Kenya in the early 20th century. His father opened a small provisions shop in Nairobi, where Manilal grew up. He recalls a humble childhood, sharing a home with three other families in Ngara, Nairobi. Despite not having wealth, he worked hard alongside his father, laying the foundation for his future entrepreneurial success.

Education and Academic Pursuits

Manilal Chandaria attended schools in Nairobi and Mombasa before heading to India for his undergraduate studies. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Jamnagar University in Bombay in 1949. He later pursued a Master’s degree in engineering from the University of Oklahoma, USA, which helped shape his professional skills and prepare him for future leadership roles.

Building the Comcraft Group

Chandaria’s entrepreneurial journey began when his family acquired a small aluminum manufacturing company, Kenya Aluminium, which had shut down during the Great Depression. Over time, this venture grew into the Comcraft Group, a global conglomerate with interests spanning steel, manufacturing, and various other industries. Under his leadership, Comcraft expanded across Africa and into markets in Asia and beyond. The company is now valued at over $2.5 billion.

Philanthropy: Giving Back to Society

A devout Jain, Chandaria has always believed in giving back to society. He and his family established the Chandaria Foundation, which supports various charitable initiatives in Kenya and other African countries. The foundation has funded schools, hospitals, and community development projects across the continent. Chandaria draws inspiration from global philanthropists such as John D.
