Rachida Dati, born on November 27, 1965, in Saint-Rémy, Burgundy, has made significant strides in French politics and public service. Currently serving as Minister of Culture in the government of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal since January 2024, Dati’s career has been marked by a unique blend of legal expertise and political acumen.
Dati’s early life was shaped by her immigrant background. Born to a Moroccan father, M’Barek Dati, a bricklayer, and an Algerian mother, Fatima-Zohra, Rachida was the second of eleven children in a family facing economic hardship. Her parents immigrated to France in 1963, and she spent her childhood in Chalon-sur-Saône. Despite being raised in a devout Islamic environment, Dati attended Catholic schools, navigating her identity as a “daughter of France” while acknowledging her North African roots.
Her academic journey began at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, where she earned a master’s degree in Economics, followed by a law degree from Panthéon-Assas University in Paris. Dati’s early work experiences included various roles, from being a maid and paramedical assistant at sixteen to working as an accountant for Elf Aquitaine during her studies.
Dati’s legal career began in earnest after she was admitted to the prestigious École nationale de la magistrature in 1997. Upon graduating in 1999, she worked as a legal auditor at the Bobigny tribunal de grande instance, later serving as a judge for collective procedures in Péronne and as an assistant to the attorney general in Évry.
Her entry into politics came in the early 2000s, aligning with Nicolas Sarkozy’s vision for France. Dati became a spokesperson for Sarkozy during his 2007 presidential campaign, and her strong performance led to her appointment as Minister of Justice from 2007 to 2009. In this role, she championed significant legal reforms and was pivotal in shaping Sarkozy’s agenda on justice and law enforcement.
From 2009 to 2019, Dati represented Île-de-France as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), where she focused on issues such as immigration, security, and economic development. Her political career continued to evolve when she was elected Mayor of the 7th arrondissement of Paris in 2008, alongside her role in the Council of Paris.
In the 2020 Paris municipal elections, Dati ran for Mayor of Paris but faced a significant challenge from the incumbent, Anne Hidalgo. Although unsuccessful, Dati was appointed as the opposition leader in the Council of Paris, where she continues to advocate for her constituents and engage in political discourse.
